The Shul Choir

The Sandton Shul Choir dates back to the early seventies, when the resident Chazan was Jacov Reichman, who spent a lot of time under the tutorship of the late Reverend Coleman, who also trained the Choir. In those days, Yacov himself conducted the Choir whilst performing his duties as the Chazan.

When Chazan Reichman left Sandton for the Oxford Shul, Maish Preskow took over as the leader of the Choir. The Choir continued to be trained by Reverend Coleman and was followed by Avron Alter, David Cohen, Lior Himmelstein and then by Evelyn Green, who is our resident trainer, today.

During the following years various Cantors occupied the Bimah until 1996 when Dr Avron Alter was appointed as the Chazan of Sandton Shul. Over the years the Choir has lost many choristers due to immigration but thankfully have been able to maintain our numbers mainly through our own shul congregants, as well as some very welcome new members in recent times.

The Sandton Shul Choir continue to sing with Avron almost every Shabbat weekend and Yom Tov which is a great privilege and pleasure. If there are any choristers out there who would like to sing in the choir, please contact Maish Preskow, mgp@tiscali.co.za. The Choir are always happy to add new voices to their chorus.
