  • It is advisable to refrain from kneading dough, using glue, paint or any other substance which is difficult to remove
  • Meat and chicken should not be eaten, expect in honor of the Sabbath or a Jewish holiday.
  • It is best to begin your preparations before sunset.

Remove make-up and skin lotions.

Remove nail polish. Cut, file and clean finger and toe nails.

Brush teeth; no particles of food should remain between teeth. Use dental floss (unwaxed preferred), only if you are sure it will not get caught between teeth. Rinse mouth with water.

Bathe with warm water. Wash entire body thoroughly. Use soap and washcloth or loofah sponge

Give careful attention to the following: corner of eyes, eyebrows, eyelashes, ears and earring holes, nose, under chin, underarms, elbows, back, around and under breasts, navel, genital area (also internally), between thighs, knees, between toes, soles of feet.

Smooth hard skin and calluses. Soften and remove dry scabs provided bleeding will not occur.

Remove protruding splinters.

Wash hair with shampoo, without conditioners.*

Shower or rinse thoroughly with a non-moisturizing soap or body wash.

Comb all hair while still wet. It is helpful to place a towel under the hair so loose hair will not fall on body.

If preparations are made at home, shower and recomb your hair at the Mikvah.

Do not dry yourself.

Check your body, visually and by touching, using a mirror when needed to ensure that you are free of intervening substances.

Use the bathroom if necessary, be sure to wash all areas to ensure clean of toilet tissue, etc. and re comb pubic hair.

Put on a robe and slippers.

Signal to the Mikvah attendant that you are ready.

The Mikvah attendant will examine your finger and toe nails and check for loose hairs that may have fallen on your back during combing. She will remain present during your immersion to pronounce it kosher upon completion.

*In rare cases where conditioner must be used to prevent knots in the hair, be sure to rinse out thoroughly
