We are in the process of counting the Omer until Shavuot. This teaches us that the Exodus was only a means to an end, the receiving of the Torah.
The Exodus was a one time miracle; the guidance of the Torah is a beacon of light to guide our lives and all of Israel, infinitely.
It is interesting that this lesson of counting is made even more poignant, when South Africa is counting their own Sefirah to the Soccer World Cup.
Of course, our counting is a little more spiritual.
